Southern Undead

Being a “big guy” to put it mildly rarely has its advantages, but one is that you get odd roles from time to time. This was one of those times. Director, Phoenix Mangus posted an ad to Craigslist asking for overweight zombies. As I’m a fan of the genre and bring the gravitas that only a large guy can to serious dramatic roles such as Loretta-Jane, a hulking monstrosity of a woman hell-bent on junk food and human flesh. I couldn’t pass up the role. Hopefully by the time this one reaches cult status, I’ll have lost weight and no one will believe it was me! Think “Devine” and zombie, and you’ll get a pretty scary picture.

The original title for this movie was “Redneck Zombies”, but I informed Phoenix that a film of the same name had already been done and was distributed by Troma. That, combined with Mebane not being so willing to have their town associated with rednecks, led to the name change. It’s now “Southern Undead - Attack of the Redneck Zombies.”

This is still underway, but I did all my scenes in September, including a joyous stagger down Main Street in Mebane, North Carolina with a hundred and fifty other zombies!

I believe the film is slated for release in the Spring of 2008. Stay tuned!
